About the event
Are you fascinated by the idea of cultivating your own mushrooms? Whether you’re a curious beginner or looking to expand your skills, we invite you to join us for an exciting opportunity to learn from an expert in the field! The North Texas Mycological Association (NTMA) is thrilled to present our February class on "How to Start Growing Mushrooms", hosted by Angel Giron.
Angel is the lead cultivator and oversees the mushroom cultivation program at Big Tex Urban Farms, a dynamic non-profit organization in Dallas committed to addressing food deserts in North Texas. By partnering with local non-profits, Big Tex Urban Farms is working to provide fresh, healthy, and locally grown food to communities that need it most. Angel’s wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience will guide you through the ins and outs of mushroom cultivation.
This comprehensive session will cover a variety of essential topics, including:
Materials Needed for Cultivation: What you need to get started and where to source it.
Grain Preparation & Sterilization: Ensuring a clean and safe environment for your mushrooms to grow.
Inoculation Techniques: How to properly inoculate your substrate to avoid contamination and set up for success.
Cloning Mushrooms with Agar: Learn how to replicate your favorite mushrooms for future cultivation.
Key Cultivation Terminology: Demystifying the language of mycology.
Understanding Substrates & More: The critical role substrates play in successful mushroom cultivation.
After the presentation, Angel will be answering your questions alongside NTMA President, Sebastian Tabibi. This is your chance to get expert advice on any questions you may have, so bring your curiosity!
As an added bonus, all attendees will receive microtubes containing several gourmet mushroom species from our culture bank—perfect for starting your own cultivation journey at home!
