Mycoremediation: Decontaminate the Environment using Fungi
Can fungi save the planet? Join the North Texas Mycological Association (NTMA) for a groundbreaking session on Mycoremediation—the process of using fungi to degrade or sequester contaminants in the environment. From cleaning up oil spills to "eating" plastic, fungi are nature’s ultimate recyclers.

Mycoremediation: Decontaminate the Environment using Fungi
Healing the Earth with the Power of Mycelium
Can fungi save the planet? Join the North Texas Mycological Association (NTMA) for a groundbreaking session on Mycoremediation—the process of using fungi to degrade or sequester contaminants in the environment. From cleaning up oil spills to "eating" plastic, fungi are nature’s ultimate recyclers.
We are thrilled to welcome Garrett Wilkerson, owner of Pegasus Bags and a dedicated mycophile, to lead this workshop. Garrett will share his expertise and firsthand experience working with specialized fungi that have the potential to solve some of our most pressing environmental crises.
Event Details
Date: Saturday, April 11, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: North Dallas Governmental Building

What We’ll Cover
Introduction to Mycoremediation: Understand the biological mechanisms that allow mycelium to break down complex toxins into harmless organic matter.
The Plastic-Eating Fungus: A deep dive into Pestalotiopsis microspora. Garrett will discuss his work with this remarkable species, which is capable of consuming polyurethane (plastic) even in anaerobic (oxygen-free) environments like the bottom of a landfill.
Fighting Pollutants: We will explore how fungi are being used to tackle heavy metals, petroleum products, and chemical runoff in soil and water.
Mycofiltration: Learn how "mushroom buffers" can be used to filter bacteria and pathogens from waterways.
Practical Applications: Garrett will discuss how the average person can apply these principles on a small scale and the future of industrial-scale remediation.
